Look closely at the main characters in the novel. Discuss different types of characters and their development throughout the story. Follow the instructions below:
Flat and Round Characters
"Flat characters" refers to simple, one-dimensional individuals, the ones that are only good or evil throughout the story. "Round characters" refers to complex, multidimensional and contradictory individuals, such as social loners or helpful egoists.
Choose 3-4 characters from your novel and point out which ones are the flat and round characters. Give three examples (quote) from different places in the novel that somebody's character is complex and contradictory. For example, there is a lot of contradiction between her or his actions, lines, values and ideas? Motivate your answer.
NOTE: Set clear page references to your quote. Divide also your text into clear sub-headings (e.g. Flat Characters).
Investigate also if there is any point in the round character's complex personality? Does she/he affect people in some way or another? Does her/his personality change from one way to another in different situations? Quote and motivate the answer.
Character development
Novels often depict a development in the characters within the story. An evil egotist eventually becomes kind and helpful. An Atheist is suddenly a believer. Often the writer has an idea what is causing the change. A person might meet some people and go through certain things that make him/her change.
Give an example of a character change during the story. Use three different passages, one from the beginning, one from the middle and one from the end of the novel. Try to show what kind of change it is and also point out possible reasons for the change.
NOTE: Set clear page references to your quote. Divide also your text into clear sub-headings (e.g. Flat Characters).
Good luck!
