Sex segregation
Most Saudi homes have one entrance for men and another for women. In Saudi culture, a woman is not allowed to meet her spouse unveiled until after the wedding. Saudi daughters are encouraged to wear the niqab in public.
Sex segregation plays an important role in Saudi's culture and society. Not only all offices, schools, universities, libraries are segregated, but also women in Saudi must have a husband or close male relative as an escort while going out. The kingdom's sexual segregation laws are enforced by the religious police, the Mutawa.
* Restaurants: Women are obliged to wear the veil in Saudi society; as a result, there were different restaurants for women till 2003, so that their faces were not exposed to non-mahram men. Recently, family restaurants were established in Saudi Arabia in which barriers were present to conceal women. Even though going to family restaurants remained foreign to the conservative Muslim society in Saudi Arabia, Muhammad Salih Al Munajjid declared it haraam for women to eat in family restaurants.
Western companies cooperate in enforcing Saudi religious regulations in restaurants. McDonald's, Pizza Hut, Starbucks, and other US firms, for instance, maintain strictly sex-segregated eating zones in their restaurants. All restaurants in Saudi Arabia bar entrance to women who come without their husbands or close male relatives.
* Medical treatments: In Saudi culture, a male doctor is not allowed to treat a women, unless there are no female specialists available; however it is permissible by law for women to be treated by men. A woman is not allowed to treat a man.
* Public transportation: In Saudi's social norms, it is considered immoral for a woman to ride in a taxi without a mahram. Riadh is the only city in Saudi Arabia in which women are allowed to ride in buses, as the bus services in Riadh are sex-segregated, with women riding in the back and entering the bus through a separate door. Usually there is a barrier in between; however women should remain fully covered while in bus.
* Banks: Women cannot maintain separate bank accounts in Saudi Arabia without their husbands' permission. Women are not allowed to enter Saudi banks unless they are accompanied by their husbands, Saudi banks are so segregated that only female auditors examine women's accounts.
In 2003, women were allowed to teach in boys' elementary schools but they were only allowed to teach boys under the age of 10 and only when no male teacher was available. It is obligatory for female teachers to cover fully in classroom in presence of male students.
